Reynolds Number – Overview

The Reynolds Number is a dimensionless quantity used to characterize flow behavior in fluid mechanics. It represents the ratio of inertial forces to viscous forces and is widely used to predict whether a flow regime is laminar, transitional, or turbulent.

The Nautical Solver Reynolds Number Calculator supports multiple common formulations of the Reynolds number, covering general flows, internal pipe or duct flows, and marine or external flow applications.

Supported Calculation Forms
  • General form using velocity, characteristic length, density, and dynamic viscosity
  • Pipe and duct flow using hydraulic diameter and kinematic viscosity
  • Marine and external flow using vessel speed and characteristic length
Flow Regime Classification

Based on the calculated Reynolds number, the flow regime is classified using commonly accepted thresholds:

  • Laminar flow: Re < 2,300
  • Transitional flow: 2,300 ≤ Re ≤ 4,000
  • Turbulent flow: Re > 4,000
Typical Applications

Reynolds number calculations are fundamental in fluid dynamics and are used in pipe flow analysis, resistance and friction estimation, heat transfer studies, boundary layer analysis, and marine hydrodynamics. In naval architecture, Reynolds number is commonly evaluated using ship length and speed through water.

Notes & Limitations
  • Flow regime limits are approximate and depend on geometry and surface roughness
  • Characteristic length must be chosen appropriately for the application
  • Most ship-scale flows are fully turbulent
  • Results should be verified for detailed design or regulatory use
